M-24 STIELHANDGRANATE GRENADE, GERMANY 1915 -GREEN

Item nr: 737/V

Second war 1939-1945

DETAILS

The hand grenade was introduced in 1915 and the design was developed in the First World War. The detonator was a friction. This method was rare in other countries, but widely used in German grenades.

THE GUN DOES NOT FIRE

HISTORY

The grenade consisted of a hollow handle with a detonator and an explosive head at one end. Inside the hollow handle, a rope with a porcelain ball was attached to the detonator. The cord was held in place by a detachable cap on the base. To use the grenade, unscrew the top of the base, allowing the ball and cord to fall out. As the cord was pulled, it dragged a steel rod through the detonator, causing it to ignite and begin the five-second pre-detonation.

The first hand grenade handle carried her rope bare, coming out of the handle near the bottom (instead of going into it through the removable cover on the base). This caused the ropes tended to jam and trigger grenades when German soldiers picked them up, causing serious (and often fatal) injuries.

The handle grenades were disassembled in wooden (later metal) crates, and the assembly of these was done before the battle. Inside the lid of his case was the following reminder: "sprengkapsel Vor Gebrauch einsetzen" (in French: insérer le détonateur avant utilisation).
