HISTORY
The most famous Muslim privateer was born on the Greek island of Lesbos, then under Turkish control. He became famous as a privateer in the early years of the sixteenth century; with his brother Aroukh, from his base in Algiers, he came to control trade in the Mediterranean under the auspices of the Turkish Empire and become a nightmare for the Spanish Empire and other Christian states of their time.
After Aroukh's death, Barbarossa was appointed admiral of the Ottoman fleet by Soliman I, and joined forces with the king of France, Francis I, to unleash a strong offensive against the king of Spain Carlos V; Only the Peace of Crépy, concluded between France and Spain in 1544, put an end to their attacks.
