Replica of the saber of Hugo De Payens.

HISTORY

Hugo de Payns (1070-1136) was the first grand master and founder of the Order of the Temple and one of the first nine knights. He was born in 1070 at the castle of Payns, near Troyes, in France, and died in Palestine in 1136.

It is claimed that the other knights were Godefroy de Saint-Omer, Payen de Montdidier, Archambaud de Saint Agnan, André de Montbard, Geoffrey Bison, and only two of whom are known by name, Rossal and Gondamer. The name of the ninth knight is unknown, although there are those who believe he could have been Hugo, Count of Champagne.

Hugo de Payns served in Godfrey de Bouillon's army during the First Crusade. He founded in Jerusalem the order which would later become the Temple, and had its statutes approved at the Council of Troyes in 1128.

He led the Order for almost twenty years until his death, making it a military institution and influential international financial institution.
